Google’s new Web Stories Plug-In for WordPress

A couple of weeks ago, Google released a WordPress plug-in focused on created Web Stories.  As is often the case with Google, this is a small step in a project that started a couple of years ago, namely the AMP project.  I won’t bore you with the details of the Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) project.  Let’s just say it was Google trying to reengineer the internet for Mobiles and was way too complicated.  The objective was to make pages load much faster on mobile devices, which is a good idea.

So the WordPress plug-in is a tool that the 455 million WordPress sites can use without needing to get into software engineering.  Happy Days!

Anyone who has used Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat or WhatsApp, will have seen “Stories”.  The little portrait images that come at the top of the apps.  Well Google quite likes that idea and has decided to put little image and video stories above search results.

In other words they are going to place stories (organic and paid) above any other paid content.  Right now, very few people are creating Google Web Stories.  So, they don’t have much in the way of stock for this highly priced real estate.  If you have stories on your website they are likely to get prioritised by Google.
